At home, I manage with air conditioners and a bathroom heater – not great, not terrible. However, the endless office and factory days are pure misery.
And stepping into a mall or hotel? Instant sauna, no way to escape.
Thankfully, I'm in Guangdong now, and I hope this won't last long. Still, memories of the chilling winters in Chongqing make me shiver.
When I first arrived in China, my interpreter asked, 'How many trousers do you have?' I couldn't recall, maybe 2 or 3. He wasn't satisfied with my answer and persisted until I realized he meant how many layers of trousers I was wearing
The buildings are made of paper but luckily electricity is so cheap that blasting the heating constantly barely affects your monthly budget.
Electricity is getting slowly slightly more expensive no? Or maybe I am stupid and my mind just feels like it's more expensive lM

It is indeed getting more expensive. Before I would pay 150 rmb per month with electrical heaters now 250 rmb per month is not even enough
Ok but … that’s a terrible solution that’s impacting adversely everyone . Climate change and waste of energy resources. Buildings should be better insulated
It's not cold in Guangdong now, it's finally FINALLY not hot
I was transitting guangdong omw home from Sanya last month. Guangzhou felt freezing to me lol
I think a tropical heat in elevators, malls, and taxis is a bigger problem than the cold itself.

This is the elephant in the room? Haha Buy a fucking heater and get off of Reddit lad Jesus Christ
Yeah - I can think of more elephants in the room regarding China than the fact that OP needs to buy another space heater and some Uniqlo heat tech.
China has many issues like most places. It just blows my mind that people need to come to Reddit to talk about such tiny things. But, I suppose we're even worse for leaving comments, right?

I was suprised and a little disappointed when I opened the thread. I thought it was going to be one of the big elephants. This is not even an elephant. It's an ant
Nah it's good to talk about tiny things. Particularly in reddit where everything is either one extreme or the other for anything relating to china (just look at r/china and r/sino, those subs are crazy, I enjoy the small talk about actual live in china).
Who would have thought winter heating was so controversial a subject? If people get heated for this...
Then they won't have to worry about coping with the cold.
I'm with you OP, I just spent a few weeks in southern China and it dropped 10 degrees in a single night
When I lived in JS province, we didn't have heater either but it's not hard to buy one... some just choose to wear more layers
Move to north and it is fine.
Most of South China are economic juggernauts but absolutely miserable in climate. Yunnan being a major exception.

The humidity? Especially summertime?
I remember wandering around Chengdu on a snowy day desperately looking for a place to eat lunch that wasn't bone-chilling. Most places had their doors and windows open despite the below-freezing temperatures.
Finally, I found a Korean restaurant with doors closed and heat blasting, so I ate there and stayed for a few hours basking in the warmth.
It’s been snowing since morning in Nanjing .
Wooow, it's been long
I'm in Chongqing and when I'm at home I just wear layers. Or I'll turn the heat on the AC for a short while. I'm kinda used to it now
Same, lived in Chongqing for several years and mostly adjusted.
Huh my ac doesn't have heat tho
Got a great HVAC in my place now, just turn it on to 21-22 degrees, takes care of things when I'm home all day. Other than that, it's just like home, only dryer
OP
Yes, as I said at home is manageble, the problem is at work.
Yeah, just post up in the office, remind people to close the door, etc. Some days I give up and find an empty room with a heater and work there
OP
Aren't you worried they're gonna die without "fresh air"?
Fair, but I've been fortunate lately with that, not as many people pushing for that lately

So north of the Yangtze... isn't all that great either. It's minus 15 outside where I live over night (and sometimes during the day), and the heating (which you can't control) means that you actually have to sleep with the window open every single night. When you walk in the door, you more or less have to strip down to underwear only and then you're still sweating because the temperature is up to 28 inside.
So you pay for heating. Then if you can't handle the extreme heat, you pay for air conditioning to cool it down... and the cycle never ends.
This year I said I'm not paying for heating again and I'd just go without but the landlord forgot to have it turned off this year and then it was too late (there's a cut off date). Anyway. I'd much prefer to be able to regulate my own heating at home rather than have dictated to me that it needs to be 28 plus morning and night. It's so hot and stuffy I could vomit.
That's Russia's style.
I am curious: how much is the heating?
I think every city charges a different price actually, where I live we pay 30 RMB per square metre, so it's just over 3000 for my apartment. It goes up a little each year, just a few RMB.
That gives you heat for most of November (starting at a low temperature and gradually building up to full temp from maybe 1st week of December) until early March when it slowly tapers off from maybe 3rd week of Feb or so!
If you DON'T want the heating on, you still need to pay a fee of 1500 RMB for it to be stopped for the year.
OP
Seems a bargain to me!
How can you think to survive with an outside temp. of -15 and no heating?
haha yeah you're right. It would just be nice if you could control the temperature yourself - rather than having a 28 degree plus home all winter. 24 I could handle haha
I got a panasonic electric radiator and it works wonders. Those cheap oil radiator didn't do much before and I had to use the AC with it to be very effective, which wasted a lot of energy.
On a side note I will never understand why people insist on keeping windows open when it's 0 degrees C. I'm trying to warm up the house FFS. Cold temperatures are bad for health and they're bad for the house, why don't people have a that minimum of common sense is beyond me.
Meanwhile the western world have to reeducate themselves about benefit of ventilation in combating air-borne diseases.

Nobody ignores that. I don't know anybody who doesn't open their windows at least once a day to get some fresh air.
However 30 mins a day is more than enough for the whole house. You don't need to literally keep your windows open 24/7 when it's -3C or +35C outside.
Its 3 degrees in Chongqing, and I’m currently sitting in my office wrapped in a blanket. I have the heat on but my colleagues keep opening the damn windows!!!
I'm in Chengdu, which is not below the Yangtze, but also not very cold throughout the year and has comparable weather to Chongqing (although not that hot in summer) and many homes do have heating here. No central heating, but most homes have their own boilers and newer apartments also have floor heating. If you don't have that, then layer up.

Lots of new energy efficient acs dont have enough btu to heat larger rooms like my living room, but they're enough to keep things cool enough in the summer. Even with my ac on full blast heat mode, I still have to wear a sweater and thermals. In the States, I would be in my underwear even in a blizzard with how efficient my northeast home insulation and central heating is.

I think a bit part of it is the insulation, it's practially non existent in China, the "double glazing" is utter shite, I can hear everything my neighbours, or someone on the street below, is saying
Well in fact people who lived in the "No heating area" are much more healthy.
People whos lives in the cold area were more willing to stay at home with hot heaters.
And that made them more easy to get cold or cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases

I wear good quality hiking shoes with warm woolly socks - keeping feet warm seems to be key.
Apart from that, layers that can be easily added and subtracted, and a small portable electric heater for the office under my desk (that I am not supposed to have).
You can buy little 'warm pack' things in most stores for hands/pockets if you are out and about.

Uniqlo is your friend.
Their heat tech thermals, even the most basic one, are more than enough for Guangdong winters. Also their ultra-light down body warmer vests are a great investment. Wear one of those when you're inside and you won't need a heater at all.
