Here at my office in Dublin, both Japanese and Chinese food are quite popular.

However, Japanese food shares exactly the same problem as Chinese food here - most people already have a predefined image in their minds of what “Japanese food” and “Chinese food” look like.
Clue: It’s pretty different compared to the image in my mind.(I don’t own all the images below) When I tell my colleagues that I am going to prepare a Japanese meal for myself… What they think I’m preparing:

Bill Chen:Chinese cuisine is extremely diverse. This country is truly enormous. Is that acorn jelly? That's some sophisticated Japanese taste. First pic? That’s just konnyaku. I can get it at most Asian grocery stores here.

Initially, they couldn't obtain all Asian ingredients, so they adjusted their recipes according to what was available. They further adapted to suit the local palate and ended up with a limited but popular menu. First, how many types of Japanese food can you recall? I only remember sushi and some noodle soups. Not many at all. But Chinese cuisine, you know there's Cantonese cuisine, Hokkien cuisine, Sichuan cuisine, dumplings, and so on. The varieties are diverse. And this is only because China has a much larger land area compared to Japan.Second, China has ......, Tajik, Russian, Han, Thai Chinese, and multiple ethnic groups. Japan only has two main ethnic groups. For your information, foreigners are not counted. Each ethnic group has its own cuisine.Various types of cuisine can meet various demands. So, of course, Chinese food is more popular.

So surprised that you can make Japanese food so well…we use that menu for breakfast at home and sometimes I do make this to give breakfast to my kids.
Brian Dong:I’ve seen Chinese restaurants in the UK sell nothing but deep-fried foods like spare ribs and even Samosas (for some reason). People in Europe have even less inclination for authentic Chinese food than people in America. At least people here have some appreciation for spicy foods like Sichuan cuisine.
Sekiguchi Masanori:When I lived in the US, I noticed that Asian cuisine was mostly arranged for Western palates. To get real Japanese, Chinese, or other Asian food, I had to go to special restaurants that served people from those countries. And even then, very often the food was not authentic. In Japan, we also have a lot of variety, but the food available in America is extremely limited.

The vast majority, from exposure and experience, are aware that Chinese dishes can be simple and rustic or really high-end, depending. As a person of Japanese descent, I much prefer Chinese food over Japanese food, and I’ll regale you with some of the comments on Japanese food I heard growing up. It’s an acquired taste, but I could never eat enough of it to acquire a taste for it. “It was—well, different.” That’s all a community queen stated about Japanese food after she had been invited to eat at a Japanese restaurant as part of her reign. Fionna Chiquita Morgan:True. Maybe it's because of where I grew up. But yes, people here adapt better to Chinese food than to Japanese or Korean food. Complaints about Japanese food mostly stem from the lack of seasoning. Since we are a tropical country, a lot of spices and seasonings are expected. Complaints about Korean food are usually due to the overuse of kimchi. Don't get me wrong. I like both on occasion, but if I'm asked to choose, I'd pick Chinese food over the others.
Mandy Lam:The simplest answer is that Japanese food is often more expensive than Chinese food. Secondly, eating raw fish is still repellent to many people in the world. Even Hong Kong people who are crazy about sushi now had to go through a long period of adaptation several decades ago to grow to love Japanese food. Another reason is that Japanese food exudes an air of pretentiousness while Chinese food is often seen as the comfort food you crave when you just want a casual meal (look at how the two cuisines are portrayed in Hollywood movies).
Yunnie Liong Lestari: I’m Chinese (specifically Cantonese), born and raised in the Fujian community in Indonesia. Even as a Chinese myself, I’m still overwhelmed by the variety of Chinese cuisine. When I reached adulthood, I finally went to my first authentic Cantonese restaurant. It’s nothing like home-cooked meals.
Fionna Chiquita Morgan: China is so vast that even among Cantonese people, there are differences in their traditional dishes among different families. If you’re Cantonese, I’m curious. Are you familiar with lotus root soup and winter melon soup?
Yunnie Liong Lestari: Yes, lotus root soup with peanuts, carrots and pork. I think my mom used to cook winter melon soup, but I’m not a fan. I prefer winter melon tea.
