SEOUL — Investigators on Friday halted their efforts to detain impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, following an impasse that lasted more than five hours as Yoon’s presidential security service barred them from entering his residence to execute their warrant.

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) — the law enforcement agency that had requested a detention and search warrant for Yoon after his botched attempt to institute martial law on Dec. 3 — said in a statement that it decided it was “impossible” to move forward with its plans and that it was worried about the safety of CIO personnel on-site after the hours-long standoff.

The agency’s decision followed a dramatic morning when investigators briefly scuffled with security service officers who were blocking their entry to Yoon’s residence, raising concerns that the situation might have turned violent. Yoon, a political novice whose fall was as swift as his ascent, is the first sitting president in South Korea’s democratic history to face arrest.

Officials said they will review their next steps. It is unclear whether they will make another attempt to detain Yoon before Monday, when the warrant expires. They can request a new warrant after that date.

The standoff underscored the impeached president’s defiant stance against efforts to hold him accountable for his short-lived martial law decree last month and the intensifying political and economic fallout that has followed. He has defended his actions and, in a statement to supporters Wednesday as he faced detainment, vowed to “fight to the end to protect the country.”

Thousands of Yoon’s supporters gathered outside the presidential residence in Seoul after a South Korean court approved a search and arrest warrant earlier this week. Supporters sought to obstruct police from entering the residence Thursday, prompting police to set up a blockade overnight to stop their work from being impeded.

In a briefing after retreating from the scene, CIO officials said more than 200 presidential bodyguards formed a wall to block them from entering, and there were scuffles “l(fā)arge and small” along the way.

The team that attempted to detain Yoon consisted of 20 CIO officials and about 80 police officers, the CIO said in a briefing. The officials left the compound in the afternoon, live footage showed.
