Thousands of jobs at risk in Hollywood as studios pivot production elsewhere

Hollywood production is plummeting as films flee California for cheaper locations, with on-location filming in Los Angeles down 22% this year. Officials hope a $750 million tax credit plan can help bring jobs and shoots back to the state.

In other words production companies want cheap labor and low or no taxes just like any other corporation.
Hollywood has reached the point where the product they offer is no longer worth the asking price
when a movie costs 300 million and flops at the theaters i can see why
My cousin has been behind the camera in LA last 35 years and is moving back to the Midwest. He said movies and tv shows are now made by accountants. The artistry which includes a GREAT story and dialogue used to be the criteria of movies. Now, the bottom line and the product is like junk food. Empty.

Instead of paying millions of dollars for one actor, how about using that money for staff and crew?
AUDIENCE IS THERE but the quality of movies is not ..
Hollywood keeps serving up the same dish hoping people won't notice, they've become lazy.
The movies coming out of Hollywood are basically the same story over and over with different actors. There hasn't been anything of substance for a number of years.
Maybe they should stop paying Actors 20, 50, or 80+ million dollars per movie, and hundreds of millions in bonuses for Ceo's.
Hollywood is dead. They do not make good movies anymore.
Honestly surprised Hollywood wasnt abandoned long ago. A lof productions moved to Atlanta, Vancouver, and Eastern countries, because of lower costs. How about highlighing the overinflated salaries of studio heads?? If studios are lookng to save, start there first.
Not only is it corporate greed driving this, but also the fact that it's so expensive to film in L.A. if you're an independent filmmaker. The permit to film in Los Angeles and the cost to set up an LLC to protect yourself financially is roughly $2,000. And that's before you start hiring cast and crew, paying for equipment, insurance, etc.
In short, Hollywood has made itself inhospitable to the very people that made it what it is. When will we Americans learn?

I lived in California for many years and moved away. The film industry is suffering the same as any other industry there. This is because, the government taxes businesses a lot because, thats where the money is. On the other hand, they leave bums on the street alone because taking care of them is an expense. Then, business owners get sick of all of the crime caused by homelessness and high taxes on them and decide to leave.
Why does California act like it's a crime if filming happends in other States? Don't those people have a right to work and feed their families?

It’s bad news all over the country. I’ve given up and left the industry. I spent almost a decade working in Georgia and loved it, but since the strikes, it’s too uncertain and unsustainable. Everything is overseas now.
I don’t think it will come back. Studios are spending too much on their executives, and trying hard to appeal to their shareholders while ignoring the audiences telling them to stop re-hashing trash. Full AI production is looming on the horizon, and GenZ & Alpha simply don’t have the attention span for movies.
Hollywood is dead.

The thing is people have transitioned away from mainstream media. I mostly watch YouTube. Videos on mma, working out , philosophy, Buddhism, cooking, self made documentaries on music and other random stuff. Things that fit what I like and hollywood wouldn't waste their time with it
Anyone can agree that spending 200-300 million dollars for a movie production is too much

As production wanes, CA is over regulated, over taxed, and over managed. I’ve heard from production is that it’s TOO expensive to shoot in LA. Permits have increased in LA. Democrats have destroyed Hollywood with their taxes and expensive fees.

It is more important to make sure studios get tax breaks, rather than support those in need...Um...if people can't afford to pay rent, put food on the table and get health care I don't think they will be able to afford to go out to the movies.

As a Californian, I think it is time for us to look at other alternatives that is not tech or movies. While they generate a lot of money, many of us don't work in those industries. Many of those who work in those fields aren't even from California, they're from other states. And when things went downhill , they left.

Tickets are too expensive. 17.50 for an adult ticket. I bought my tickets online to watch Sinners this weekend for myself and 4 friends. They added a 10 dollar fee at the end and I ended up spending almost $100!! Insanity. This is why I only go to the movie theater around 3 times a year.

You really can?t rely on the entertainment industry if you want to make a consistent living. And that?s everywhere -from California, New Mexico, New Orleans, Atlanta, New York and beyond. It's a whole list of reasons. The glaringly obvious one is that CA is just too expensive to do business in. We all already know that, it's even in the descxtion. Then there is the quality of what's being put out. The movies industry followed the music industry by not taking risks on new ideas and sticking with what worked in the past. In this industry that manifested itself in sequels, remakes, and prequels. Very few original ideas anymore. Then there is more competition. In the past movies were mostly made in Hollywood and TV networks made most of their stuff in nearby Burbank except NBC which has always been New York Based. Other TV networks like CW, A&E, and others started producing their own content and they were producing in places like Vancouver and Atlanta. Netflix too followed this model when they started making original content. The LA film industry is trying to operate in the 21st century as if it's still 1990.

Here in Australia we've seen film studios popping up everywhere. We've just had one built in Cairns, one on the Gold Coast, two in Sydney, one in Melbourne and another one is in plans out West in Perth due to more and more movies and shows being shot here. A big part of this is due to a 30-40% tax write-off by each state's governments but also because Australia is seen as a stable place to invest in as well as diverse in terms of outside shots. Hollywood's decline has really boomed a new pictures industry here.

This is America outsourcing its labor to other countries - it is horrible. It’s the hollowing out of the American film industry outsourced to other countries. This was due to shutdown during covid, the writers guild striking, the screen actors guild striking and producers saying hey we are moving our productions somewhere else because it’s too expensive here. It has nothing to do with politics or bad films being made. America is amazing at making films, I’ll always support American film making. But it has and is in the process of being completely outsourced outside of the USA.

As someone working in this industry, this is more about the greed of the American worker than anything else. People who invest in the films have the right to claim and expect their percentage back on their investment. Entitled workers complain if there isn’t a coffee truck or if the “complimentary breakfast” isn’t to their liking. No one forces anyone to work in the film industry. unxs are part of the issue. Demanding money that cancels out film incentives. Take the teamsters: if they truly wanted “more teamsters working” why have drivers claim unsafe 15-16 hr days? OT pay vs 8-9 hr shifts and double the workforce? OT pay to take naps? Entitlement.
They should band reality shows that are not necessary. TV shows, movies, cooking shows, comedians and people who are talented are fine because they're actually working.

This has been going on for years now. We are in bad shape. My personal calls to state and federal representatives went unanswered.
This has been happening since the writers strike. I live in Los Angeles and know many people who haven’t been working properly since and work in the film industry. Corporations have been focusing on using a.i concept art and have moved locations elsewhere to take advantage of lower taxes and get away with paying people cheaper.
