Not during a meeting.

I was called and notified our special needs child was dieing, and would be dead in less than an hour. I called the men together, let each one know what and where I was on each machine. I left as the company was in good hands.

A Japanese company had been trying to hire me for years, actually decades. We came to an agreement of duties, insurance, perks and suchlike. I gave my two weeks notice. I was offered a double of salary, I thanked HR, and said no.

I had worked in a high street clothing store for a few years since I was 17. One day, after a few years, the owners son pulled me into the office and told me I needed to shave my beard off and I couldn't wear shorts. I was flabbergasted. At the time we were encouraged to wear clothing that we sold and I was wearing Levi shorts. I also took great care to keep my facial hair neat and trimmed.

I thanked her but declined, saying I no longer want to work here as I don't trust her nephew's management. She was upset but understood.

I wouldn’t do this now, but when I was younger during a performance review I asked why I wasn’t getting recognition for providing good results. My manager told me point blank that hard work isn’t important (I had a dead end pink collar job) and had been repeating that it was only necessary to do the bare minimum. I looked around me and realized I was around a lot of smart women who were doing just what they had to do because they’d become so cynical and burned out. I handed in my resignation, and went on to have a way better career doing other things.

I’ve observed over the years that it’s better to move on if you are capable than to stay in a job where you’re unhappy and disgruntled. I’ve met so many people resentful, bitter and trapped when they actually could have moved on. Being so unhappy like that bleeds on into every aspect of your life! There are more opportunities than you think!

re: this post is getting a lot of views. I realize that at the time I had more privileges than most - some people simply cannot change jobs. And years later, I am completely not bitter, but it is the result of me having an entrepreneurial mentality and being in environments where there are many opportunities. Not everyone has this chance! I have a lot of sympathy for people who do not have the chance to hop to better jobs, but it’s always so much better for the soul to just quit and do something else if you don’t feel you have an opportunity.

When I was in college, I was a live-on-site apartment manager for an apartment complex with 80 units. When I was hired, not one person lived in the buildings. I was to fill the apartments with renters, as well as work on renovations to the apartments. I did all of this and managed to rent every apartment within a couple months, as well as do the renovations. I thought nothing of it — I was young and inexperienced and thought this was normal.

I once started a job as a dispatcher where i iwould pack for transport and have some amount of stock control, every morning started with a groupd meeting with the boss giving a general run down of what was expected of the day.

Problem with this was (apart from yelling at me) i was thrown into a total mess which the pervious person had created and was slowly working through it to clean it up and inventry the stock back how it should be and every other person in the place knew this.

As such i will pack my tools and belongings and have a written resignation on your desk in 15 minutes. I will also be reporting this behaviour with the job agency i was recruited by”.

I had to do an emergency dash from UK to the Swiss border as my daughter was going to have an op there and was on her own. I was away from work for 4 days and the op went well, she was recovering well so I went back to work next day, lots of driving and two flights.

I was getting my annual review. I had far exceeded any expectations that I had been given earlier in the year and my office had outproduced 95% of our group. I was top ten if not in the top five offices in our group. It wasn’t my district manager, doing my review. It was his boss, the VP. When they scheduled my review I assumed it was to discuss a promotion as I had met every goal for the past five years.

I used to work for credit unx. I had been a loan officer at my previous credit unx job, but at my new job they didn’t have an opening so I was a teller. I took a job at a local, well known, busy sandwich shop one summer before college and after a year abroad, so I was 19. (This was before Subway took over the market). I rode a moped to work. The owner provided one shelf for employee personal belongings such as purses. He typically employed girls. He was an overbearing boss and thought girls were more likely to take mistreatment and not talk back. One day, in another snit, he decided my helmet was taking up too much room on that shelf, so he threw it in the trash can. Yup, he threw the helmet that goes on my head into the trash with food waste. This was two weeks into my working there! I went into the back room and saw it in the trash. I asked how it got there and he smirked and told me what he had done. I immediately quit, told him he had no right to do that with my personal property, called up my old boss for whom I had worked since 9th grade (age 14) and asked for my old job back and for more than the minimum wage the sandwich shop owner paid.

Had a new director come in to the company who was the daughter of a minister, and thought she could do anything she liked. The first thing she did was to replace the men in her team with lesbiens. Her stance was she promoted females in the work place. I was the last male in the team. Every Friday there would be a lunchtime meeting and drinks would be served. All of a sudden I was no longer invited, I worked in another location. She couldn’t get rid of me because I had worked for the company for over 20 years with a cast iron contract. I had been off sick with cancer for about a year and when I returned to work the first thing she said to me was, not welcome back, but at your age and your illness you should retire. Then we got taken over by another larger company. At a senior level meeting we were all asked to say a few words to the new CEO. My boss started say about promoting women in the work place and he interrupted her and said we promote the best person. He too was an ex-minister and didn’t like her or her father. She was moved into a cupboard a few weeks later and then resigned to work for another company. Myself went to HR to complain about her before she left, and they offered my full redundancy plus 2 years salary not to take harassement action against her. I was six months away from the legal retirement age and decided to take their 500,000 $ offer.

I worked as a math tutor with underprivileged kids when I lived in DC. I did it as a third job to make extra money. I did it because I loved helping students learn and it paid okay.

Working a graveyard shift for a mining company, I asked my boss at 4AM lunch break, how much longer was it likely to take to hire a permanent employee to take the job I’d been doing for about six weeks. I’d taken the “promotion” with the understanding that the hiring process had already started.

It was 1984. My children were 4 and 2. I was working for an OEM supplier in Rochester, NY, and was just recruited from my sales position to be National Sales Manager for a German/American partnership that was just getting going in the US (they were well established for decades in Germany). I gave my two weeks notice to my employer, and on the appointed day, got up way early and drove from the Southern Tier of NY, and showed up for work as scheduled in Zelionople, PA.

Walk into my “office” and there’s some guy sitting at my desk. I introduce myself, and ask him who he is. He says he’s the new National Sales Manager, and had arrived about 20 minutes prior to me. Told him that I, too, was hired to be the NSM. So, I walk down to the office of the guy who interviewed and hired me, and told him “There’s some guy in my office who says he’s me!” He replies that they had made the other guy the offer before interviewing me, but never heard back, so assumed he’d turned it down. “Don’t worry,” he said, “You have more experience and way more industry contacts. We’ll let you fight it out for a couple months and see who performs better.” Since there was an industry trade show scheduled for a few weeks hence, I figured that would be the test.

My old territory was Northeast US, and the show was in Atlantic City, I knew all my former customers would be at the show. So, the show starts, and everybody and their brother stops into our booth, see me and ask what’s going on. Second question was: what’s up with this partnership? Not sure I want to buy from a company that is half owned by my competitor. Fair enough question, and I answered honestly, that the new company was a 50/50 partnership.

We fly back (on the American partner’s company Lear jet) to Zeli on Sunday night and on Monday morning the scumbag who hired two people for the same job calls a sales meeting. First item of business discussed is what we’re going to say to people who ask about the uncomfortable business relationship between the two companies. We’re told to tell people that Owner X is not a partner, he’s just a customer.

I was a manager at a health insurance company. I was. In the a IT department. I was working closely with the manager im the claims department. The two of us came up with an IT solution which would eliminate 25% of the costs of claims processing. We researched it thoroughly and created spreadsheets, implementation plans, power points, flow charts—the works.

I’d gone thru my performance review - top grade in every category and then got told what my raise was. I remember looking at him and saying “that’s an insult” and getting up and walking out of his office door. As I was leaving I did hear him say “but that was approved by X” (his manager in corporate).

About ten minutes later my phone rang - it was “X” - seems my manager had called his manager to tell him about my reaction. Long story but I ended up with a promotion and a significant raise a couple of weeks later. But that really wasn’t the end of it - I got approached for another job shortly thereafter and my manager was more than slightly floored when I told him what my new base salary was.
